Cells which have the potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during embryonic development and growth. In adults, stem cells serve as an internal repair system by being able to divide without limit to replace other cells - each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or to differentiate into another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a blood cell or a muscle cell. In equine medicine, stem cells can be used therapeutically, for instance in the treatment of tendon lesions in the horse.

On trouve les cellules souches par exemple dans le sang du cordon ombilical ou dans la moelle osseuse.
Ces cellules sont utilisées à des fins thérapeutiques, comme pour le traitement de certaines formes de cancers (leucémie) ou pour la régénération des tissus (tendons).
- Stammzelle, f
Hierunter versteht man eine Körperzelle, welche noch die Fähigkeit hat sich in unterschiedliche Richtungen zu entwickeln (zu differenzieren) und somit unterschiedliche Funktionen zu erfüllen. Stammzellen finden sich beispielsweise im sogenannten roten Knochenmark oder im Nabelschnurblut. Der Einsatz von Stammzellen ist vielfältig, beispielsweise werden sie therapeutisch zur Heilung von bestimmten Krebsformen (Leukämie) oder zur Wiederherstellung von Geweben (Sehnen) eingesetzt.
