Insulin is a hormone produced by cells in the pancreas. It is mainly responsible for the regulation of glucose levels in the blood but it is also involved in the metabolism of other carbohydrates and fat.

Insulin ist ein Hormon, welches in spezialisierten Zellen der Bauchspeicheldrüse (β-Zellen der Langerhans Inseln) gebildet wird. Insulin senkt den Blutzuckerspiegel nach Aufnahme von Kohlenhydrat-reicher Nahrung und fördert die Aufnahme der Glukose in Leber- und Muskelzellen. In anderen Zellen beeinflusst Insulin den Fett- und Aminosäurestoffwechsel und den Kaliumhaushalt.
Beim Pferd steht ein zu hoher Insulinblutspiegel (Hyperinsulinämie) ursächlich im Zusammenhang mit dem Equinen Metabolischen Syndrom und bestimmten Formen der Hufrehe.
