A hammer with a hemispherical head opposite the face, used to peen welded metal.

driving hammer

A light hammer with a flat face used for driving the horseshoe nails through the shoe into the hoof. There are two versions of this hammer, one with a rounded end opposite the face, another with a pair of claws opposing the face which can be used to wring off the ends of nails or remove partially inserted nails.

forging hammer

A fairly heavy hammer used to forge horseshoes. The hammer weighs between 0.8 and 1.5 kg depending on personal preference and on the type of work being performed with the hammer. The head is well balanced, generally both faces are circular in shape with a flat face and a slightly rounded face.

hammer

Wooden handled tool with a metal head at a right angle to the handle. In farriery used to drive nails into the hoof.

Various types sizes and weights are used in forging to manipulate metal.

hammer testing

This is a form of percussion testing and is part of a thorough lameness examination. The hoof wall is systematically tapped with a synthetic mallet to evaluate a possible pain response, signalised by the (reproducible) pulling away of the limb when a painful area is struck.

set hammer

A tool used to set down parts of a horseshoe in its manufacture. A type of flatter held by its wooden handle and struck with a sledgehammer to create a flattened area.
