When looking at the solar aspect of the hoof, the longitudinal axis of the frog should run from the cleft between the bulbs to the centre of the toe and bisect the bulbs of the heels, the frog and the sole of the foot into two equal halves.

central groove of the frog
The groove in the middle of the frog that is broad and fairly shallow in a healthy hoof, but can be narrow and extremely deep in horses suffering from contracted hooves or sheared heels.

An anatomical term refering to the wedge shaped pad of softer horn on the sole side of the hoof. The frog is the most flexible part of the hoof as the horn has a lower keratin content. The widest part of the frog is level with to the angle of the heels and the apex points towards the toe. The long axis of the frog should divide the hoof into two almost equal halves.

Partie du pied du sabot. Formation triangulaire sur la face solaire du sabot entre les barres et la sole. La base de la fourchette est située en arrière près des angles des barres (talons), l'apex est dirigée vers la pince, l'épine sert de support aux deux branches du torus digital (coussinet plantaire).
L'axe médian de la fourchette devrait diviser le sabot en deux parties égales. La corne de la fourchette est flexible car elle contient peu de kératine.
Elle joue le rôle de soufflet d'accordéon permettant l'expansion et autres mouvements des talons.

Teil der Hornkapsel des Hufes. Dreieckiges Gebilde auf der Sohlenseite des Hufes, welches sich keilförmig in den hintersten Abschnitt zwischen den Sohlenschenkeln einfügt. Die Spitze zeigt Richtung Zehe, die Längsachse teilt den Huf in zwei annähernd gleich grosse Hälften. Der Strahl besteht aus Weichhorn und ist der elastischste Anteil der Hornkapsel.
