The separation of an object (in medical terms usually a bone) into two or more pieces. The pieces may remain in their original position or be dislocated. In a closed fracture, the site of injury remains covered by skin, in an open fracture the broken bone is exposed.

The highest grade of lameness where a horse refuses to place any weight in one of its limbs. This is often the case if a bone is fractured, it may however be due to other reasons entirely.

The breakage of a nail within the hoof wall. It usually occurs at the heel nails especially with over expanding flat feet. It is often the cause of loose shoes and shoe loss.
