C

centrifugal force

The apparent outward force that draws a rotating body or object away from the centre of rotation.

F

force

In physics, a force is any influence that causes an object to undergo a change in speed, direction or shape. The unit of force is the Newton (N) but it is refered to as F in mathematical formulae. Force (F) = mass (m) x acceleration (a).

force application point

The point on an object to which force is applied.

force plate

A technical term for a plate (usually of metal), underneath which force detectors are positioned. A force plate can be used for gait analysis, allowing the force of a limb positioned on the plate during the stance phase to be evaluated .

G

ground reaction force

The force between the limb of a horse and the ground during the stance phase. This force can be measured with a force plate.

S

shearing force

A force or strain produced by pressure exerted on a structure which can lead to physical deformation. A shear force acts sideways on an object and leads to its  layers being shifted laterally in relation to each other, or its structure being shifted sideways in relation to a fixed base.
