The region at the end of a long bone between the joint surface and the neck of the shaft (metaphysis).The epiphysis consists of a dense network of bony trabeculae (spongy bone) between which lies red bone marrow. Surrounded the spongy bone is a layer of compact bone, the area of bone that forms the joint surface is covered by a layer of hyaline cartilage and the bone directly underneath it is known as sub-chondral bone.

Extrémité renflée d'un os long, constituée de tissus spongieux. Dans les épiphyses se trouve un faisceau de fins trabécules, qui forment le tissu spongieux. Au centre se trouve une cavité occupée par la moelle osseuse. Vers l'extérieur, l'épiphyse est délimitée par une substance osseuse compacte, elle-même recouverte d'une couche de cartilage hyalin dans la région articulaire.

Ende eines Röhrenknochens. Im Inneren der Epiphysen befindet sich ein Geflecht von feinen Knochenbälkchen, welche die Spongiosa bilden. Zwischen den Knochenbälkchen liegt Knochenmark, nach aussen wird die Epiphyse von einer kompakten Knochensubstanz begrenzt, welche im Bereich der Gelenkflächen noch von einer Schicht hyalinem Knorpel bedeckt ist.
