Cartilage is a firm but flexible type of connective tissue found in many areas of the body. It consists of cells (chondrocytes) and extracellular matrix with collagen and elastin fibres, cartilage does not have a direct blood supply which makes it very slow to heal. There are several types of cartilage found throught the body: hyaline cartilage (e.g. on the ends of bones in joints), elastic cartilage (e.g. in the ears and the nose) and fibrocartilage (e.g. in bronchial tubes and menisci).

Le cartilage est un tissu conjonctif à la fois solide et flexible non vascularisé. Il est composé de cellules cartilagineuses entourées par la matrice extracellulaire.
Il existe plusieurs types de cartilages: le cartilage hyalin (que l'on trouve à la surface des articulations), le cartilage élastisque (présent dans l'oreille) et le fibrocartilage (ménisque).

Es gibt verschiedene Knorpeltypen: hyaliner Knorpel (z.B.: Gelenkknorpel), elastischer Knorpel (z.B.: Ohrmuschel) und Faserknorpel (z.B.: Menisken).

ungular cartilage
Flat, wing-like structures made from fibro-cartilage that are attached to the palmar/plantar processes of the distal phalanx (coffin bone) and extend proximaly to above the level of the hoof capsule. They can be palpated proximaly to the coronary band in the lateral and medialpalmar/plantar region of the pastern where they should yield to gentle pressure. The cartilage can ossify in part or completely (sidebone).

Chaque pied comprend deux cartilages ungulaires. Ils prolongent proximalement et palmairement/plantairement les processus de la phalange distale et dépassent le bord proximal du sabot. Ils ont une structure fibreuse (ils étaient anciennement appelés fibro-cartilages complémentaires) et sont en forme de lame aplatie. Les cartilages ungulaires sont palpables proximalement sous la peau dans la région coronaire; de nombreux ligaments les fixent à P1, P2, P3 et à l'os sésamoïde.

Aus Faserknorpel bestehende, gebogene Platten, die das Hufbein proximal und palmar/plantar überragen und die Hufbeinäste als Basis haben. Sie können im palmaren/plantaren Hufbereich proximal des Kronrandes medial und lateral ertastet und durch leichten Druck auf ihre Elastizität geprüft werden. Hufknorpel können teilweise oder vollständig verknöchern (Hufknorpelverknöcherung).

ossification of hoof cartilage
The presence of bony tissue (visible on a radiograph) in the collateral cartilage of the hoof. In some horses, sidebone is a normal development with increasing age (most frequently observed in cobs and heavy horse breeds). If seen in younger horses, the causes (apart from genetic) include conformational problems of the limb or the hoof, repeated trauma or work on hard ground and inappropriate shoeing. Sidebones are usually painful whilst forming and may then settle to cause virtually no discomfort at all. However large sidebones may interfere with associated tissue and cause discomfort.

Dépôt de substance osseuse dans le cartilage. L'ossification des cartilages semble être liée à l'âge chez certains chevaux. D'autres facteurs peuvent entrer en compte: surpoids, activité intense, travail sur terrains irréguliers et durs, traumatismes répétés, défaut d'aplomb, sabot à forme déviante, erreur de ferrage.
En règle générale les formes cartilagineuses n'occasionnent pas de boiterie.

Hufknorpelverknöcherungen scheinen bei gewissen Pferden eine Alterserscheinung zu sein. Früher waren davon häufig Kutschpferde betroffen weshalb in diesem Zusammenhang der Ausdruck «Plasterlahmheit» gebraucht wurde. Faktoren, die bei der Entstehung beteiligt sind: hohes Körpergewicht, Arbeit auf harter Unterlage, wiederholtes Trauma, Fehlstellungen, von der Norm abweichende Hufform und Beschlagsfehler. Hufknorpelverknöcherungen führen nicht zwingend zu Lahmheiten.
