About 50 million years ago at the beginning of the middle Eocene, Orohippus appeared. It was still of similar size and stature as Hyracotherium. Front limbs still ended in four, hind limbs in three toes. Over time, Orohippus' teeth showed some adaptation to a slightly coarser diet, including leaves and maybe some grasses. One of the premolars became more similar to a molar, providing more grinding surface.
During this time, the temperatures slowly started to decrease, which marked the onset of the transition in vegetation.

Vor ca. 50 Millionen Jahren, am Anfang des mittleren Eozäns, entwickelte sich Orohippus aus einer Form des Hyracotherium, welchem es in Grösse und Statur sehr ähnlich war. Die Vordergliedmassen endeten noch immer in vier und die Hintergliedmassen in drei Zehen.
Die Zähne von späten Orohippus-Formen waren besser an eine gröbere Nahrung angepasst, welche Blätter und möglicherweise auch erste Gräser enthielt. Einer der Prämolaren entwickelte sich in Form und Funktion ähnlich zu einem Molaren, wodurch eine grössere Kaufläche entstand.
Zu dieser Zeit begann das Klima langsam kälter zu werden. Dies initiierte einen Wandel in der Zusammensetzung der Vegetation, welcher in den nächsten paar Millionen Jahren von statten gehen würde.
