road studs
A type of stud devised originally to prevent slipping on hard surfaces (roads, icy tracks etc.). The studs all include a tungsten carbide pin which greatly improves the durability of the stud. Both screw-in and tapered drive-in studs are available. See also ice stud.

A slimey liquid substance secreted by certain cells in the mucosa. It covers the mucous membrane and forms a protective layer, e.g. in the mouth, the gastrointestinal tract, the lungs, or the female reproductive organs. Besides water, mucous contains salts, enzymes, antibodies, and other proteins.

A membrane made from one or several layers of cells that lines body cavities and internal organs. Some of the cells secrete mucous so that the membrane is always kept moist - this is why it always has a slightly shiny appearance. Mucous membranes are found in the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, the reproductive tract and the urinary tract. They protect the tissue beneath from external influences (e.g. by removing particles of dust or pathogens from the air that is breathed in) and from internal influences (e.g. protecting the tissue of the bladder from the accumulating urine).

Muscle tissue is one of the four basic tissue types. Muscle tissue is made of muscle cells which function to produce motion. The result is either locomotion or movement within internal organs (e.g. beating heart).
There are 3 types of muscle tissue: cardiac muscle in the heart and smooth muscle in the other internal organs, these are controlled without conscious thought. The third type, skeletal muscle, is responsible for movement, is consciously controlled and found throughout the locomotory system.

The movement of actin and myosin relative to each other is the cause of muscle cell contraction. The myosin filament is responsible for the conversion of chemical energy into force and movement.
