keratinisation
This term refers to the process by which epithelial cells are transformed into horny tissue through the increasing incorporation of keratin filaments into the cellular matrix.

On entend par kératinisation la transformation des cellules de l'épiderme en cornéocytes. Lors de la kératinisation, la production de kératine est d'une part augmentée, de l'autre les cellules s'aplatissent, leur noyau dégénère et leur membrane se durcit, aboutissant à la cornification.
Les processus de kératinisation ont lieu lors du renouvellement de la peau et des muqueuses, ainsi que lors de la pousse de cornes et de sabots.

Darunter versteht man die Umbildung von Epithelzellen zu Hornzellen. Bei der Verhornung wird einerseits vermehrt Keratin gebildet, andererseits flachen die Zellen ab und der Zellkern geht zu Grunde. Verhornungsprozesse finden bei der Erneuerung von Haut und Schleimhaut statt, sowie beim Wachstum von Hörnern, Hufen und Klauen.

perioplic band
A ring like prominence forming the upper edge of the hoof capsule. The horn is relatively soft and when wet, is becomes paler in colour and even softer in consistency. In effect, it represents the proximal portion of the stratum externum of the hoof wall (the periople) so it may also be known as the perioplic band.

tread injury
A wound anywhere on the coronary band, most frequently caused by interference with other limbs: A typical cause is an overreach injury where a hind foot catches and injures the coronary band or heel bulbs in the palmar region of the fore foot. Injury of the medial portion of the coronary band can be caused by a contralaterallimb, and injury to the lateral portion of the coronary band is most often a result of interaction with another horse. Other causes of injury to the coronary band include knuckling over or hitting the region on a solid object such as a jump.

The prominence above the dorsal edge of the hoof capsule which is created by a ridge of subcutaneous tissue with a good blood supply and the coronary and perioplic corium. The more prominent the coronary cushion, the thicker the horn of the hoof wall that grows down from it.

coronary corium
The region of the dermis located beneath the dorsal edge of the hoof capsule. The coronary dermis is covered in papillae of various sizes; they can be up to 6 mm in length. The coronary dermis supplies the epidermis which forms the stratum medium of the hoof wall.

An anatomical region of the hoof and pastern including the coronary band, the adjacent skin and the subcutaneous tissue of the coronary cushion. Injury of this area may lead to disruption of the horn building epidermis and result in permanent hoof wall damage.

The use of trimming and shoeing to influence a conformational trait (stance and limb deviations, hoofconformation), an abnormality in gait (e.g. interference) or a disease of the hoof or lower limb (e.g. laminitis or navicular syndrome). Any shoe which differs from a normal shoe (e.g. through extensions, bars etc.) can be considered a corrective shoe.
