height (at the withers)

The height of the horse is the vertical distance between the highest point of the withers (usually the spinous process of the 5th thoracic vertebra) and the ground. The unit of measurement is traditionally the hand, which is composed of 4 inches. On the continent the unit of measurement is the cm.

withers

Anatomical region of the horse at the transition between the neck and the back. Created by the long spinous processes of the first few thoracic vertebrae. The highest point of the withers is where the height of the horse is measured (distance between this point and the ground).
