windpuff
A term used to refer to distention of a tendon sheath or joint cavity. It is usually due to a synovial effusion (increased filling of the sheath or joint with synovial fluid) that is caused by a low grade inflammation of the membrane lining of the tendon sheath (synovitis). In most cases the swelling is soft and the horse does not exhibit lameness. If the inflammation is more severe, the distention is more prominent and lameness may be present. The typical location of windgalls is the tendon sheath of the digital flexor tendons or the fetlock joint.

1. Umgangssprachlich: Äusserlich sichtbare Umfangsvermehrung synovialer Strukturen (Gelenke, Sehnenscheiden, Schleimbeutel), die durch eine vermehrte Ansammlung von Flüssigkeit (Synovia) hervorgerufen wird. Man unterscheidet Gallen, welche ohne Entzündungszeichen einhergehen (umgangssprachlich Windgallen oder asymptomatische Gallen ), von Gallen, welche mit Entzündungszeichen wie Schmerzen und Wärme einhergehen (sogenannte symptomatische Gallen).
2. Medizinisch:
Grünlich-gelber Verdauungssaft, welcher in der Leber produziert wird und über den Gallengang in den Zwölffingerdarm geleitet wird. Hier unterstützt die Galle vorwiegend die Fettverdauung und in geringerem Mass die Eiweissverdauung.
Der Mensch, wie auch die meisten Säugetiere besitzen eine Gallenblase als Speicherorgan für die Galle. Das Pferd besitzt keine Gallenblase da Nahrungsfette in der Diät des Pferdes nur eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen.
