white line

The white line is the visible transition between the horn of the hoof wall and the horn of the sole. The horn of the white line is comparatively soft horn that consists of the horn produced by the terminal papillae on the end of the dermal laminae (interlaminar horn) and the horn that has grown down between the dermal laminae (laminar horn). This gives the white line a striated appearance. In a longitudinal section, the white line extends from the solar margin to the distal end of the laminar corium.

The white line must not be confused with the unpigmented innermost layer of the hoof wall (stratum medium). This layer is immediately adjacent to the white line and is often paler in colour than the white line itself; it can be differentiated by the lack of striations.

Elle part du niveau du bord d'appui de la paroi proximalement jusqu'aux lamelles du podophylle. Selon la conformation du sabot, l'épaisseur de la ligne blanche peut aller de quelques millimètres à plusieurs centimètres.

La corne de la ligne blanche est composée d'une part de corne lamellée poussant vers le bas et d'autre part d'une corne tubulaire spéciale, partant de la couche germinative des papilles terminales des lamelles dermales.

Die weisse Linie reicht vom Niveau des Tragrandes nach proximal bis zu den empfindlichen Lederhautlamellen der Hornwand. Je nach Hufkonformation können dies wenige Millimeter bis mehrere Zentimeter sein.

Das Horn der weissen Linie besteht einerseits aus dem nach unten wachsenen Blättchenhorn und andererseits aus einem speziellen Röhrchenhorn, dem Terminalhorn oder Terminallagenhorn, welches von der Keimschicht der endständigen Zotten (Terminalzotten) der Wandlederhautblättchen gebildet wird. In der Sohlenansicht sollte die weisse Linie nicht mit dem unpigmentierten Röhrchenhorn des Kronhorns verwechselt werden; dieses ist oft heller und liegt unmittelbar aussen auf, weist aber nicht die charakteristische feine Streifung der Blättchen auf.

A disease affecting the horn in the region of the white line. The horn in the white line is generally softer than the horn in the adjacent hoof wall and it may be additionally weakened by diseases or disorders of the hoof such as laminitis. These factors contribute to the increased potential for the horn of the white line to become damaged due to mechanical factors (e.g., small stones that become lodged in the horn) or invading micro-organisms (e.g., bacteria or fungi) that lead to disintegration of the horn. White line disease is a progressive disorder that can lead to damage in the stratum internum or the innermost layers of the stratum medium of the hoof wall proximally to the white line. Damage can become extensive and cavities can be formed within the hoof wall. This results in an undermined hoof wall, a condition very similar to and often confused with seedy toe.
