A visible and palpable bony enlargment of the lateral side of the hockjoint due to ossifying periostitis of the fourth tarsal bone. Often seen in combination with a bow legged conformation behind.

tarsus
A complex joint between the lower leg and the hind cannon bone of the horse. The joint consists of 4 levels; the tarsocrural joint between the tibia and the talus is a hinge joint with a large range of movement in one plane, the other levels consist of the small hock joints (the proximal and distal intertarsal joint and the tarso-metatarsal joint). The small hock joints have an extremely limited range of movement.

tarsal osteoarthropathy
Progressiveinflammation and associated degeneration of parts of the hockjoint (specifically the distal intertarsal and tarso-metatarsal joints). Bone spavin is one of the most common forms of osteoarthritis seen in the horse. It can affect one or both hocks. Predisposing factors include hindlimbconformation, type of work and hereditary factors.

tenosynovitis of the tarsal sheath
A localised swelling in the hind limbs, slightly above the hock in front of the achilles tendon, visible on the medial and the lateral aspect of the limb. It represents a distension of the tarsal sheath, the tendon sheath surrounding the deep digital flexor tendon at the level of the hock. Only in exceptional cases is it responsible for a lameness; most cases are due to an asymptomatic low grade tenosynovitis (inflammtion of the membrane lining the tendon sheath).

A swelling over the point of the hock which can attain a considerable size. The cause is an accumulation of fluid in the subcutaneous bursa (Bursa calcanea subcutanea).
