An inflammation of the innermost layer of a synovial structure (e.g. a joint, a tendon sheath or a bursa). It is characterised by thickening of the synovial membrane and increased production of synovial fluid, leading to distention of the affected structure. Depending on the location and the severity of the inflammation, it may be associated with lameness.

Les membranes synoviales étant fortement innervées et vascularisées, il peut s'y produire un afflux sanguin ou un œdème, marqué par une production excessive de synovie.
On reconnaît les synovites, outre une possible douleur, au gonflement des structures, aussi appelé épanchement synovial.

Entzündliche Zustand der inneren Schicht (Synovialmembran) einer synovialen Struktur (Sehnenscheide, Schleimbeutel, Gelenk).
Eine akute Synovitis ist durch vermehrte Durchblutung, Oedem (Flüssigkeitseinlagerung) der Membran und durch eine vermehrte Produktion von Synovia gekennzeichnet.
Zu erkennen ist dieser Zusand unter anderem an einem erhöhten Füllungszustand er betroffenen Struktur.

tenosynovitis of the tarsal sheath
A localised swelling in the hind limbs, slightly above the hock in front of the achilles tendon, visible on the medial and the lateral aspect of the limb. It represents a distension of the tarsal sheath, the tendon sheath surrounding the deep digital flexor tendon at the level of the hock. Only in exceptional cases is it responsible for a lameness; most cases are due to an asymptomatic low grade tenosynovitis (inflammtion of the membrane lining the tendon sheath).
