A clear, pale yellow fluid with a viscous consistency (similar to egg-white) that is found in synovial joints and tendon sheaths. Its most important function is as a lubricant: in synovial joints it reduces friction between jointcartilage during movement, in tendon sheaths it reduces friction between the tendon and the surrounding structures. It also nourishes the jointcartilage, which has no blood supply. It is also known as synovia or joint fluid.
