A highly infectious disease of the respiratory tract, which is caused by bacteria (Streptococcus equi var. equi). Common symptoms include swelling of the lymph nodes beneath the lower jaw and in the throat region, inappetence, and fever. Although strangles can be treated with antibiotics, one of the most important measures to limit the spread of the disease is to put in place basic biosecurity measures. Due to the high risk of infection, one should avoid infected animals, their droppings, or tack, coming into contact with unaffected horses.

Aufgrund des hohen Infektionsrisikos sollten infizierte Tiere, während der vom behandelnden Tierarzt vorgeschriebenen Zeit, in Quarantäne gehalten werden, damit weitere Ansteckungen vermieden werden können.
