Forms the back part of the roof of the mouth. In contrast to the hard palate, the soft palate does not consist of bone but of several muscles and connective tissue, covered in a mucus membrane. During swallowing, the soft palate closes off the nasal passages to prevent food or fluids entering the nasal cavity (similar to the function of the epiglottis).

Bildet die Rückseite des Daches des Mundes. Im Gegensatz zum harten Gaumen besteht der weiche Gaumen nicht aus Knochen, sondern aus mehreren Muskeln und Bindegewebe, die von einer Muskelmembran bedeckt sind. Beim Schlucken schließt der weiche Gaumen die Nasengänge ab, um zu verhindern, dass Nahrung oder Flüssigkeiten in die Nasenhöhle gelangen (ähnlich der Funktion des Kehldeckels).
