Scintigraphy is form of diagnostic imaging which involves the administration of radioactive substances. Whereas in radiology and computed tomography external radiation passes through the object being studied, the radioactive isotopes administered intravenously prior to scintigraphy cause radioactive emition directly from the object. This radiation is detected by a special camera (gamma camera) and represented as an image on a screen. A higher concentration of radioisotopes is found in tissue that is subject to increased function. This may be due to physiological factors (joints always show more activity than bone shafts) or may be the result of pathological changes such as inflammation or fracture repair. These areas will show up as 'hot spots' - areas of increased radioactivity.

La scintigraphie est une méthode d'imagerie médicale qui peut être utilisée avec d'autres techniques afin de compléter un diagnostic.
Contrairement à la technique de radiographie où le corps est exposé à une source externe de rayons X traversant la matière selon sa densité, la scintigraphie utilise l'administration intraveineuse de substances radioactives (aussi appelées radiotraceurs) à faibles doses.
Les molécules radioactives ainsi absorbées par le patient émettent un rayonnement y (gamma), qui est enregistré par une caméra spéciale (gamma-caméra ou caméra à scintillation).
L'information est ensuite traitée par ordinateur.

Die diagnostische Szintigraphie ist eine weiterführende diagnostische Methode, bei der radioaktive Substanzen verwendet werden. Im Gegensatz zur Röntgenuntersuchung und zur Computertomographie, wo die Röntgenstrahlen von einer Röntgenröhre erzeugt werden und anschliessend das Objekt durchdringen, wird bei der Szintigraphie dem Patienten eine radioaktive Substanz intravenös verabreicht. Die Strahlen, welche nun aus dem radioaktiven Patienten austreten, werden von einer speziellen Kamera erfasst und in sichtbares Licht umgewandelt. Ein Computer wandelt diese Information in ein Bild um.
