The passive stay apparatus in the horse's hindlimb allows the horse to stand using minimal muscular energy. The apparatus uses a combination of two anatomical features: the first is the stifle locking mechanism which enables the stifle to be 'locked' (immobilised) by hooking the patella and the medial patellar ligament over the medial trochlear ridge of the femur. The second element is the reciprocal apparatus which dictates that the stifle, the hock and the fetlock joints always flex and extend synchronously, so immobilisation of the stifle will also lock the hock and the fetlock in position. This system allows the horse to rest a large portion of the weight of its hindquarters on the 'fixed' hindlimb and rest the collateralhindlimb.

Mécanisme qui permet au cheval de se tenir debout sans effort musculaire afin de se reposer. Le cheval utilise pour ce faire deux particularités anatomiques:
- le mécanisme patellaire, où la rotule s'accroche sur le bord médial de la trochlée fémorale grâce au ligament patellaire médial,
- l'appareil réciproque, qui permet au grasset et au jarret de se mouvoir simultanément.
Si le grasset est fixé, le jarret l'est aussi.

Mechanismus, welcher dem Pferd ermöglicht mit geringstem Verbrauch von Muskelkraft im Stehen zu Ruhen. Hierfür gibt es an der Hintergliedmasse des Pferdes zwei anatomische Besonderheiten: den sogenannten Fixationsmechanismus der Kniescheibe, welche über dem inneren Rollkamm des Oberschenkelknochens festgehakt werden kann; und den sogenannten Spannsägenmechanismus, wodurch das Sprunggelenk und Kniegelenk nur synchron bewegt werden können. Ist das Kniegelenk fixiert, gilt dies auch für das Sprunggelenk.
