The passive stay apparatus of the frontlimb enables a horse to rest while standing and use a minimal amount of muscular energy to do so. Instead of using muscles to stabilise joints, this function is performed by tendons and ligaments which do not fatigue to the same extent. The shoulder joint is prevented from flexing through the M. biceps, the elbow is fixed in extension by the M. triceps. A tendon (Lacertus fibrosus) which effectively extends out of the biceps tendon and the forearmfasciainserts below the carpal joint and locks this in extension. The carpal, fetlock and pastern joints are prevented from overextension by the tension of the flexor tendons and the suspensory ligament.

Ce mécanisme permet au cheval de se tenir debout sans grand effort musculaire des membres antérieurs. Le muscle triceps est en tension, maintenant ainsi le coude en extension.
La bride du biceps (lacertus fibrosus, qui naît du muscle biceps et passe sur le devant au-dessus de l'articulation de l'épaule pour se poursuivre vers l'os métacarpien III) transmet la tension vers le carpe, le maintenant ainsi en extension.
Les tendons fléchisseurs et le ligament suspenseur du boulet sont tendus et évitent une hyperextension des articulations du carpe et des phalanges.

Für das Stehen müssen die Vordergliedmassen ähnlich wie die Hintergliedmassen nur wenig Muskelkraft aufwenden. Die Anspannung des M. triceps hält das Ellbogengelenk in Streckstellung. Durch ein Sehnenband (Lacertus fibrosus), das mit dem M. biceps vorne über dem Schultergelenk entspringt und zum Röhrbein zieht, wird auch das Karpalgelenk in Streckstellung gehalten. Die Beugesehnen und der Fesselträger verhindern ein zu starkes Überstrecken von Karpal- und Zehengelenken.
