Dorso-palmar (-plantar) balance of a hoof is evaluated from the side. Stance, limb conformation and hoofconformation must all be considered when evaluating balance. For a hoof (and limb) to be balanced, the axes of the limb must be straight and the the hoof pastern axis (HPA) should be in alignment. The length of the dorsal hoof wall should be in proportion to the length of the pastern and the length and slope of the heels should be in proportion with that of the toe.

A regional nerve block used during lameness examination. The nerves blocked are the medial and lateral branches of the palmar/plantardigital nerve. The block can be applied at various positions on the pastern; the structures desensitised depend on the exact placement of the anaesthetic. Most frequently used sites of injection
1. Applied just above the collateral cartilages
2. At mid pastern, just behind the palpable vascular bundle.

Tendons and tendon sheaths lying within an annularligament are constrained from all sides (between bone and anular ligament). If the tendons or tendon sheaths become swollen or the ligament constricts (e.g. due to direct injury) the build up of pressure can cause inflammation, pain and serious lameness. The surgical sectioning (division) of the annularligament can relieve the pressure and lead to healing of the previously encased structures .

Ist hierfür zu wenig Platz vorhanden und werden die im Fesseltunnel liegenden Strukturen eingeengt, kann dies zu Entzündungen, Schmerzen und Lahmheiten führen, man spricht vom Fesselringbandsyndrom. Zur Therapie kann das Fesselringband chirurgisch durchtrennt werden.

The application of a regional nerve block to the lateral and/or medial branch of the digital nerve (Nervus digitalis palmaris/plantaris medialis/lateralis) at the base of the proximal sesamoid bones where the vascular bundles can be palpated (the nerve is located directly palmar/plantar to this bundle).
