Horseshoe nails are used to attach the horseshoe to the hoof. The nails have a unique form; the head is square or rectangular with a chamfered edge, the shaft or shank of the nail has a rectangular cross-section and the point is bevelled on one side. This facilitates the nail exiting the hoof wall at a certain height rather than remaining within the wall when it is driven in.

Les clous servent à maintenir le fer sur le sabot ou sur l'onglon. La forme toute particulière de la pointe du clou (affilure) favorise sa sortie vers l'extérieur du sabot lorsqu'on l'enfonce.

Hufnägel dienen zur Verbindung des Hufeisens mit dem Huf. Ein Hufnagel besitzt einen quadratischen oder rechtwinkligen Kopf, einen Schaft und eine Spitze. Die Spitze ist auf einer Seite abgeschrägt (Zwicke). Diese spezielle Form der Nagelspitze bewirkt beim Einschlagen, dass der Nagel frühzeitig seitlich aus der Wand austritt.
