frayed wall
A loss of continuity of the horn wall originating from the bearing edge characterised by a loss of substance.The damage may start as a grass crack and progress to a defect or it may be due to a trauma such the loss of a shoe. If the damage is limited to the outer layers of the hoof wall this results in a frayed appreance of the hoof wall, damage to the entire thickness of the wall leads to a 'gap' in the distal border. The cause of this type of damage is frequently the result of an error in nailing (too large or misplaced nails) or an excessively long shoeing interval.

Dégradation de la paroi pouvant toucher des couches isolées ou toute l'épaisseur de la paroi. Ce traumatisme peut être partiel ou impliquer une perte de substance. Il apparaît généralement parce que la paroi a été arrachée ou a éclaté.
Les facteurs favorisant ce traumatisme peuvent être le déferrage, l'usure causée par des intervalles de ferrage trop longs, l'utilisation de trop gros clous, une corne de mauvaise qualité ou un positionnement des clous trop loin dans la paroi.
Un brochage adéquat dans la ligne blanche est primordial pour prévenir cette détérioration.

Zusammenhangstrennung der Hornwand, welche einzelne Schichten oder die gesamte Wanddicke betreffen kann. Die Zusammenhangstrennung entsteht in der Regel durch Ausbrechen, kann unvollständig sein oder mit Substanzverlust einhergehen. Zur Vorbeugung dieser Defekte sollte unbedingt auf die korrekte Nagelung in der weissen Linie geachtet werden. Die Positionierung des Nagels zu weit in der Hufwand begünstigt die Entstehung solcher Defekte. Weitere Faktoren, welche bei der Entstehung eine Rolle spielen können, sind zu lange Beschlagsperioden, Verwendung zu grosser Nägel, oder auch schlechte Hornqualität.
