An infection of the soft tissues underneath the hoof capsule resulting in the formation of pus. As the formation of pus results in a significant build-up of pressure underneath the hoof capsule, this is an extremely painful condition that can cause non-weightbearing lameness. The colour of the pus can give some indication of the depth of the abscess: superficial abscesses involving predominantly keratinised cells produce dark pus, if deeper structures are involved (corium, subcutis, periosteum or even bone), the pus is pale yellow/grey/pink in colour.

Processus inflammatoire purulent à l'intérieur de la boîte cornée. Se développant dans un contenant non-extensible (le sabot), il est très douloureux. On appelle ce processus: le phénomène de compartiment. On distingue les abcès superficiels des abcès profonds. Dans les abcès superficiels le pus est souvent gris-noir et liquide. Dans l'abcès profond, le pus a une couleur jaune-rose et sa consistance est plus épaisse.

Eitriger, raumfordernder und deshalb meist sehr schmerzhafter Entzündungsprozess innerhalb der Hornkapsel, welcher von der Huflederhaut ausgeht. Man unterscheidet oberflächliche von tiefen Hufabszessen. Bei oberflächlichen Abszessen ist der Eiter meistens grauschwarz und dünnflüssig; bei tiefer gelegenen Abszessen ist der Eiter häufig gelb-rosa und eher dickflüssig.
