Barstock is the straight steel rod from which horseshoes are manufactured. The barstock comes in various sizes (sections) and profiles; flat or concave being the most common. Fullered barstock has a groove or crease along the entire length of the bar, which is known as the fullering in the finished shoe. Fullered concave is the most common bar for shoe-making in the UK.

A tool with a chisel shaped head with the blade and striking surface parallel to the handle. The tool is used to create a fuller groove in a plain horseshoe.

crease nail
A nail with a rectangular head which is used in fullered shoes. The exact type of nail (E nail, plate nail etc.) makes no difference as long as the corresponding stamp is used. Nails for plain stamped shoes usually have a square head.

groove
A groove in the ground facing side of the horseshoe in which the nail holes are stamped. At the level of the surface, the groove has a width of approx. 6 mm: equivalent to the width of the nail being used, at the bottom, the groove runs to a point - the sides of the groove are not necessarily symmetrical in slope. The fullering may run the whole length of the shoe or be restricted to the quarters. Fullering increases traction compared to a conventional stamped shoe. The process of applying this groove is also known as fullering.
