The groove in the middle of the frog that is broad and fairly shallow in a healthy hoof, but can be narrow and extremely deep in horses suffering from contracted hooves or sheared heels.

An anatomical term refering to the wedge shaped pad of softer horn on the sole side of the hoof. The frog is the most flexible part of the hoof as the horn has a lower keratin content. The widest part of the frog is level with to the angle of the heels and the apex points towards the toe. The long axis of the frog should divide the hoof into two almost equal halves.

Die Spitze zeigt Richtung Zehe, die Längsachse teilt den Huf in zwei annähernd gleich grosse Hälften. Der Strahl besteht aus Weichhorn und ist der elastischste Anteil der Hornkapsel.

The frog

The sensitve tissue that supplies the epidermis of the frog. The dermis of the frog is covered with relatively short papillae. It is well connected to the digital cushion that lies directly above it.

central ridge of frog
On the inner surface of the hoof capsule, the frog-stay is the internal spine of hoofhorn projecting from the frog upward into the digital cushion. On the outer surface of the hoof capsule, the equivalent structure is the central sulcus of the frog.

The ridges or branches of the frog are the prominent parts of the frog between the central sulcus and the lateral grooves of the frog. In a healthy hoof, these are in contact with the ground when the hoof is loaded.
