epiphyseal plate

growth plate

Area of cartilage between the end of the bone (epiphysis) and the shaft of the bone (diaphysis) which is responsible for bone growth in length. When growth is completed the epiphyseal plate becomes ossified (bone replaces cartilage),  and the epiphyseal plate becomes the epiphyseal line. This happens at different times in different bones.

Comprise entre l'épiphyse et le diaphyse, la métaphyse est la zone où la croissance osseuse se produit chez les jeunes animaux. Après la fermeture (ou soudure) de la plaque de croissance épiphysaire, le processus de croissance en longueur est terminé. Cette soudure n'a pas lieu concomitamment pour tous les os.

Nach dem sogenannten Fugenschluss findet kein Längenwachstum mehr statt. Die Wachstumsfugen der Gliedmassenknochen schliessen sich zu unterschiedlichen Zeitpunkten.
