Accumulation of pus in a naturally existing anatomical cavity or space in the body (e.g. in the uterus, the guttural pouches, or between the lungs and the inner wall of the ribcage). It is to be distinguished from an abscess, which is an accumulation of pus in a newly formed cavity.
