A hoof in which the hoof capsule, as a whole or in parts is contracted reative to a 'normal' hoof. The hoof walls in the quarter and heel region are more upright than usual. In extreme cases, the width of the hoof is narrower at the bearing edge than it is at the coronet. Soft tissue within the hoof capsule is under increased pressure.

Sabot sur lequel on constate un étranglement de la boîte cornée. Selon la localisation de ce resserrement, on distingue les encastelures à talons serrés, à quartiers serrés ou à pied serré. La déformation de la boîte cornée (quand elle est acquise) est souvent la conséquence d'un défaut d'utilisation du pied généralement dû à de l'inconfort.
