A horse's coat colour where the body, mane and tail are a yellowish shade of brown. The colour can vary greatly from pale chestnut to dark ('liver') chestnut. In contrast to the bay colour, the limbs are always the same colour as the body and the mane and tail are either the same colour or lighter (this is known as a flaxen mane and tail).

Les chevaux alezans ont une robe allant du rouge-marron au crème; les poils longs sont de la même couleur ou plus clairs (crinière et queue). À l'opposé des chevaux couleur baie, les membres sont toujours de la même couleur que le corps - jamais noirs. Il existe des variantes de couleur plus claires ou plus sombres, engendrées par des gènes spéciaux (alezan «crins lavés»).

Als Füchse bezeichnet man Pferde mit rotbrauner Fellfarbe und gleichfarbigem oder hellerem Langhaar (Mähne und Schweif). Im Gegensatz zum Braunen haben die Gliedmassen immer die gleiche Fellfarbe wie der Körper, sind also niemals schwarz. Es gibt hellere und dunklere Farbvarianten, welche durch spezielle Gene, wie z.B. "Flaxen" entstehen.
