Over-trousers made from two separate leg panels which are joined by a belt. Each panel can be fastened around a leg, usually with a zip along the outside of the calf and the thigh. Chaps are usually made from leather or some form waterproof material such as neoprene or waxed cotton. They provide additional protection for the riders legs either from rough bush or from the elements. They are also worn for decorative purposes in western riding, where they often have fringes or other forms of ornamentation on the leg panels and on the belt.
