The removal or destruction of the gonads (in the male the testes, in the female the ovaries). In horses it is usual to castrate male animals. This can be done by a variety of methods: standing sedated with local anaesthesia of recumbent in general anaesthesia.

Entfernung oder Zerstörung der Keimdrüsen (beim männlichen Tier die Hoden, beim weiblichen Tier die Eierstöcke). Beim Pferd ist die operative Entfernung der Keimdrüsen beim Hengst üblich. Der chirurgische Eingriff kann entweder am stehenden, sedierten Pferd unter Lokalanästhesie oder liegend in Vollnarkose durchgeführt werden.
