A type of permanent mechanical fastening. Before being installed a rivet consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. On installation the rivet is placed in a punched or pre-drilled hole, and the tail is upset (i.e., deformed), so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place.

The vertical play between the handles of a jointed tool (pincers, tongs etc.) that is a result of a looseness of the rivet joining the two halves of the tool. This is desirable to a certain extent but too much will prevent the tool from being used effectively.

rocker toe shoe
The outer edge of the ground surface of toe of the shoe is forged to a pitch, therefore the ground surface of the shoe is curved, but the foot surface is level. The hoof is trimmed level. Note the difference between the UK and US usage of the terms rocker and rolled toe shoes.

rocker toe
The rolled toe is a natural or artificial proximal deviation of the plane of the bearing edge in the region of the toe. Its purpose is to ease breakover of the hoof at the end of the supporting phase of a stride. Unshod horses that move over realtively hard ground aquire a natural rolled toe due to wear.
Horseshoes can be forged with the same deviation in the toe region, also with the purpose of easing breakover. There are two methods by which this can be achieved, the rolled toe and the rocked toe.

Le relevé en pince est l'endroit du sabot par où le pied bascule en pince. Cet endroit est marqué naturellement par usure régulière ou artificiellement par le maréchal-ferrant. En maréchalerie, on peut faire un relevé de pince en modifiant la pince du fer antérieur. Le but est alors de faciliter la bascule du pied en fin de phase d'appui.
On distingue le relevé de pince forgé du relevé de pince biseauté.

Die Zehenrichtung ist eine natürlich oder künstlich entstandene Abrollkante im Bereich der Zehenspitze.
Auf natürlichem Weg entsteht sie durch den regelmässigen Abrieb (angelaufen). Künstlich raspelt der Schmied sie an.
Schmiedetechnisch kann eine Zehenrichtung durch die Modifikation am Schuss (Zehe) des Vordereisens angebracht werden. Ziel ist es, das Abrollen des Hufes am Ende der Stützbeinphase zu erleichtern. Man unterscheidet die angeschmiedete (rocking toe) von der aufgebogenen Zehenrichtung (rolling toe).

The toe of the shoe is turned up i.e. forged to a slight upwards curve. Both the ground surface and the foot surface of the shoe are curved. The hoof must be trimmed accordingly. Note the difference between the UK and US usage of the terms rocker and rolled toe shoes.

Diese Art der Zehenrichtung wird im deutschsprachigen Raum routinemässig, in den angelsächsischen Ländern eher therapeutisch angewandt.

rounding the upper of lower edges of the horseshoe to reduce the chance of injury (see also safing). Rounding the ground facing edges of the shoe can also affect how the hoof lands, as round edges create less drag and a less abrupt landing than an angluar edge.

Talus pratiqué aux dépens de l'épaisseur du fer, il peut être réalisé en enlevant de la matière (par limage, ponçage…) ou par écrasement du bord du fer réalisé au marteau. Les bords du fer à cheval peuvent être biseautés sur la face supérieure en rive interne afin de donner au fer une ajusture anglaise, sur la face inférieure en rive externe du fer afin de diminuer la surface d'appui en contact avec le sol et favoriser le rouler du pied en fin d'appui ou les contraintes articulaires au moment du posé. Les extensions en branche médiale ou latérale sont aussi généralement biseautées sur la face supérieure.

Bodenweite Ränderung entspricht einer Abschrägung der Sohlenfläche, bodenenge Ränderung entspricht dem Abschrägen der Kante der Bodenfläche. Das Anbringen einer Ränderung wird als «rändern» bezeichnet.
