P
An extinct genus of the Equidae family which lived in North and South America, Europe and Asia in the Miocene period approximately 7 million years ago. It was the first of the modern one-toed ungulates with one hoof and only vestigial remains of the other toes. It was larger than its ancestors with a shoulder height of almost 120 cm. It lived on plains and steppes or in light woodland.

Der Pliohippus lebte in Nord- und Südamerika, in Asien und Europa am Ende des Miozäns vor rund 7 Millionen Jahren. Er kann als erster, moderner Einhufer bezeichnet werden. Die Schulterhöhe war auf ca. 115 cm angewachsen und die Seitenstrahlen an den Gliedmassen waren stark reduziert oder ganz zurückgebildet.

An (imaginary) line of reference that is used to evaluate the horse's conformation. Plumb lines are vertical lines dropped from a specific point of the body to the ground to which limb axes are then related to determine whether a horse has "correct" conformation.

Correct forelimb conformation, front view
An inflammation of the corium (dermis) of the hoof. The swelling of the tissue leads to pain (lameness) and the increased flow of blood to the inflammed tissue is detectable as increased filling and pulsation of the digital arteries. The horse generally shows a marked pain response on application of the hoof testers.
There are several types of pododermatitis, one differentiates between purulent and non purulent forms, localised and generalised forms and chronic or acute forms.
A hoof abscess, for example, is a localised purulent form, laminitis is a generalised non purulent form and corns are a localised non purulent form.

On distingue plusieurs sortes de pododermatites: purulente ou non, chronique ou aiguë, locale ou diffuse. Par exemple, les abcès du sabot sont localisés et purulents; la fourbure est diffuse et non-purulente; les bleimes sont locales et non-purulentes.

A group of structures in the palmar/plantar region of the hoof including the navicular bone and its ligaments, the podotrochlear bursa and the most distal portion of the deep digital flexor tendon as it runs over the navicular bone and inserts on the coffin bone. The syndrome known as navicular disease can involve degenerative changes to any one or several of these structures.

Das Strahlbein mit dem Hufrollenschleimbeutel dient als gepolsterte Umlenkrolle für den unteren Anteil der tiefen Beugesehne.
Bei der sogenannten Hufrollenerkrankung (Podotrochlose, Strahlbeinerkrankung, Strahlbeinlahmheit) sind einer oder mehrere der genannten Anteile von entzündlichen oder degenerativen Prozessen betroffen.

A large bony prominence on the cranio-lateral crest of the ilium (hip bone). It is the point of origin of the large gluteal muscles (M. glutaeus superficialis and part of the M. glutaeus medius).

Poisoning is a state of ill health or death occuring after a poison or toxin has been indroduced into or absorbed by an organism. The degree to which a poison can damage an organism depends on many factors. The tolerance of a potentialy poisonous/toxic substance varies from organism to organism.
