A horse that serves no other purpose than as a partner in leisure activities. This may include any form of equestrian activity, but participation in an equestrian sport is not the main reason for which a horse is kept.

The length of the horseshoe should be such that the heels of the shoe cover the angle of the wall and extend back slightly (ideally to the point where a vertical line dropped from half the heel height meets the ground). This provides the heels of the hoof with adequate support. However, in horses which frequently overreach and have a tendency to pull their shoes, the length of fit should be somewhat reduced.

A forging technique applied to the foot facing side of the shoe to level any unevenness or bulging of the shoe after forging or shaping. The same technique can be used to draw-out areas of the shoe - widening or lengthening the branches. In this case one must take care not to reduce the thickness of the shoe too much.

A specific German term refering to bursitis of the subtendinous bursa of the biceps femoris muscle (bursa subtendinea musculi bicipitis femoris) which is located underneath its insertion on the femur. Often caused by long periods of recumbancy.

A strong fibrous structure consisiting of tough, dense connective tissue made of collagenous fibres. Ligaments connect bones to each other in the region of joints and provide stabilisation by preventing movement in directions other than those for which the joint was intended (e.g. collateral ligaments prevent lateral or medialdislocation in a hinge joint that normally moves in a sagittal plane).
