Hipparion

Hipparion evolved as a side branch from Merychippus. This equid spread from America over the Bering Strait to Eurasia and eventually even Africa after equids had become extinct in Eurasia due to geological and climatic changes. Hipparion was and remained three-toed. It was an evolutionary successful equid which gave rise to sixteen different species of grazers and browsers, which all eventually became extinct.

Aus der Merychippusgruppe ging eine Seitenlinie hervor, die als Hipparion bekannt ist. Diese Art verbreitete sich wieder über die Beringstrasse nach Asien, Europa und sogar bis nach Afrika nachdem in Folge geologischer und klimatologischer Umwälzungen die Pferdeartigen in Eurasien ausgestorben waren. Es waren dreizehige Grasfresser. Ihre Art war sehr erfolgreich und entwickelte sich in der Folge in vier Entwicklungslinien mit sechzehn Spezies weiter.

Neohipparion

Neohipparion's distribution appears to have been limited to the "New World" - hence ist name (neo meaning new). It branched off from Hipparion about 16 to 5 mya and had a wither height of approx. 1 m.
It was three-toed and - based on fossil records - very common.

Neohipparion hat seinen Namen, weil sich seine Verbreitung auf die „Neue Welt“ (Amerika) zu beschränken scheint. Er lebte vor 16 bis 5 Millionen Jahren und war ca. 1 m gross. Vor etwa 10 Millionen Jahren gab es auf der Erde eine unglaubliche Vielzahl von Arten und Unterarten von Urpferden, grossen und kleinen Hipparionen, Protohipparionen und echten Equiden, von waldbewohnenden Laubäsern bis zu auf weiten Ebenen weidenden Grasfressern, von denen aber nur wenige Linien in der Evolution erfolgreich waren und zum rezenten Wildpferd führten.
