Feeds, feedstuffs or mixtures of differed feeds, that are rich in starch, sugars, protein (or all of them), and therefore have a "high concentration" of energy. Examples are cereals or cereal based pellets (in contrast to pellets based on grass or lucerne). Concentrates should never make up the largest proportion of a horse's diet, as this can have a negative impact on the (digestive) health.

Concentrate mix
An anatomical term refering to a rounded prominence on the articulating (joint building) end of a bone. The most prominent condyles are at the distal end of the femur and the proximal end of the tibia, together forming the stifle joint.

Connective tissue is one of the four basic tissue types. It is made up of cells surrounded by non-living material including ground substances and fibres which are collectively known as extracellular matrix. Connective tissue supports and connects tissues and organs thereby giving them shape and holding them in place. Connective tissue can vary greatly in consistancy from loose to dense. There are several types of highly specialised connective tissue; both blood and bone are forms of connective tissue.

Contact is the the term used for the connection between a rider's / driver's hands and the horse's mouth via the reins. For an even contact, the reins should be streched in a straight line between the hands and the mouth. Contact must be elastic enough to enough to allow for the natural movement of the horse's head and soft enough to allow the horse to show some mouth activity, without a loop developing in the reins. A soft and even contact is the basis for all riding and driving activities and one of the most important forms of communication between the rider/driver and the horse.

A hoof in which the hoof capsule, as a whole or in parts is contracted reative to a 'normal' hoof. The hoof walls in the quarter and heel region are more upright than usual. In extreme cases, the width of the hoof is narrower at the bearing edge than it is at the coronet. Soft tissue within the hoof capsule is under increased pressure.

A limb deformity that is may be congenital or acquired. The congenital form is a form of flexural deformity and can affect both the deep and /or the superficial flexor tendon. In young horses horses during growth it is often the deep flexor tendon that is involved, leading to the development of a club foot. In older horses, a tendoninjury can cause contracture of the superficial flexor tendon, leading to an extremely upright pastern.
