The clench is the end of the nail that is visible on the hoof wall. It is nipped off and turned over so that it acts as an anchor for the nail in the hoof wall. A finished clench should be between 1 and 1.5 times as long as the nail is wide and ideally be embedded in a groove in the hoof wall (a clench trench) so as not to protrude unnecessarily.

A small groove or notch that is cut into the horn of the hoof wall immediately under the protruding end of a nail into which the nipped-off end of the nail can be sunk to prevent it from protruding above the surface of the hoof wall.

Part of the process of clenching; using a specialised tool (the clench knife or clench trencher), a small groove is cut into the horn of the hoof wall directly underneath each emerging clench. The clenches are then sunk into the grooves, giving them a better hold and preventing the protrusion of the clenches above the surface of the hoof.

A triangular or semicircular projection extending upwards from the outer edge of the horseshoe. It serves to increase the stability of the shoe on the hoof and to stabilise the hoof wall. A clip is made by drawing out a section of the existing shoe or by welding on an extra piece of metal. Normally there are one or two clips on a shoe, these can be set against the hoof wall or let into the hoof wall.
