A steroid hormone synthesised by the body which reduces inflammation and pain at the site of the injury and also supresses the immune system. Cortisone is also manufactured synthetically and applied locally or systemically as an anti-inflammatory drug.

Full-fitting of a shoe so that it extends slightly beyond the hoof wall behind the widest part of the hoof. This is done to prevent the heels from growing over the outer edge of the shoe during the shoeing interval.

windsucking
Crib-biting is a type of compulsive behaviour seen in horses and it is considered a stable vice. It can have a negative influence on the animals health. The horse grabs a solid object with its upper incisors (usually a stable door or fence) and tenses certain muscles of the neck and throat, resulting in a typical arching of the neck and the sucking of air into the windpipe.
Windsucking is similar behaviour performed without the horse grabbing a solid object. The cause of either vice is presumed to be lack of exercise, lack of contact to other equines and insufficient forage. The existence of a genetic predisposition or involvement of stomach ulcers as a cause (and an effect) are also likely. Crib-biting and windsucking have been linked as a causal effect to colic.

Dans le tic à l'air, le cheval avale de l'air sans appui, en faisant des mouvements saccadés de la nuque et en émettant des sons gutturaux.
Il existe plusieurs causes à ces tics. On pense qu'un manque d'exercice, une privation prolongée de contacts sociaux, une alimentation pauvre en fourrage, peuvent conduire à ces troubles. On suppose également qu'un ulcère gastrique pourrait être un élément déclencheur.
Ces tics pourraient déclencher des coliques gastro-intestinales.

Verhaltensstörung des Pferdes, bei welcher das Pferd bestimmte Hals- und Kehlkopfmuskeln anspannt und dabei Luft in die Speiseröhre und den Magen saugt. Ein Pferd, das koppt wird «Kopper» genannt.
Man unterscheidet 2 Arten von Koppen: beim Aufsetzkoppen setzt das Pferd mit den Schneidezähnen des Oberkiefers auf einer vorstehenden Kante auf (Boxentüre, Zaun); Aufsetzkopper erkennt man an den charakteristischen Schleifspuren der Oberkieferschneidezähne. Beim Freikoppen schluckt das Pferd ohne Aufzusetzen Luft.
Die Ursachen für das Koppen sind vielfältig. Man glaubt, dass mangelnde Bewegung, fehlender Kontakt zu Artgenossen oder ungenügende Mengen Raufutter zu dieser Verhaltensstörung führen. Weiter werden erbliche Faktoren oder bestehende Magengeschwüre als Ursache vermutet. Das Koppen steht im Verdacht Koliken des Magen-Darm-Traktes auszulösen.

A system of two ropes attached to walls (or other solid structures) on both sides of the horse. The ropes are attached to either side of the horse's halter / head collar with snap hooks or quick release hooks. Cross-ties restrict movement of the horse's head (and body) and effectively prevent a horse from turning around, walking forwards or backwards, or bending its neck backwards. Crossties are useful to keep a horse standing straight and centrally in a space (e.g. in a stall, corridor, or trailer), and they provide more confinement than just one rope. The ties should also be long enough to allow the horse to stand with its head in a normal position, but not so long as to allow the horse to get a head under or limb over them.
