A single, large dose or portion. A bolus can refer to a single large dose of a drug, or a distinct mass moving through the gastrointestinal tract.

Bone marrow is the tissue found in the interior of bones. It is responsible for the production of red and white blood cells. There are two types of bone marrow: red bone marrow (high proportion of blood building cells) and yellow bone marrow (high proportion of fatty tissue). At birth, all bone marrow is red; with increasing age, this is gradually converted to yellow marrow. In adults, red marrow is predominantly found in flat bones (pelvis, sternum, ribs etc.) whereas the medullary cavity is filled with yellow marrow.

A piece of dead bone which has become separated from the rest of the bone to which it initially belonged. It is a typical sign of bone necrosis or osteomyelitis (an infection of the bone). The inflammation results in a localised loss of blood supply, which leads to cell death. De-vitalised areas of bone are removed by osteoclasts, and a sequestrum may be formed. Eventually, most sequestra will also be removed by the osteoclasts, sometimes leading to abscesses and draining tracts or fistulas.

tarsal osteoarthropathy
Progressiveinflammation and associated degeneration of parts of the hockjoint (specifically the distal intertarsal and tarso-metatarsal joints). Bone spavin is one of the most common forms of osteoarthritis seen in the horse. It can affect one or both hocks. Predisposing factors include hindlimbconformation, type of work and hereditary factors.

A disease caused by toxins produced by the bakterium Clostridium botulinum.
The bakteria occur in cadavers (the bodies of dead animals) and thrive in anaerobic conditions. Horses may ingest toxins produced by the bacteria through eating haylage or silage contaminated with a cadaver.
Botulism toxins affect the nervous system. Typical clinical signs include progressive muscle weakness culminating in recumbency and difficulties swallowing and eating. Death may occur through paralysis of respiratory muscles. This is a very serious disease which is diffucult to treat. Careful screening of forage before feeding is the best way of preventing its occurance.

Vergiftung durch Toxine des Bakteriums Chlostridium botulinum.
Diese Bakterien vermehren sich und produzieren Gift unter Sauerstoffausschluss. Pferde sind sehr empfänglich für Botulismus. Typische Fälle von Botulimus beim Pferd treten nach der Fütterung von Silage auf, welche mit Tierkadavern kontaminiert wurde.
Typische Symptome sind Schlundkopflähmungen, wodurch die Pferde nicht oder nur eingeschränkt fressen und trinken können. Auch Ataxien und Festliegen, sowie Koliken treten auf; Blasenlähmungen und Sehstörungen werden ebenfalls häufig beobachtet.

varus deformity
Bow legged in front: a conformational fault of the forelimbs when viewed from the front. An imaginary line dropped from the shoulder passes through the medial portion of the carpal joint; the carpal deviates laterally, also known as a varus deformity.
Bow legged behind: a conformational fault of the hindlimb when viewed from behind. An imaginary line dropped from the point of the buttocks passes medially to the hock; the hock deviates laterally (hock varus).

Défaut d'aplomb des membres thoraciques, constaté à l'examen de face: une ligne droite passant de la pointe de l'épaule au milieu du sabot passe médialement par rapport à l'articulation du carpe. L'axe du membre est également dévié latéralement à hauteur du carpe. On appelle ce défaut également varus du carpe (genou cambré, dévié en dehors).
Défaut d'aplomb des membres postérieurs, constaté à l'examen de derrière: une ligne droite passant de la pointe de la fesse (tubérosité ischiatique) au milieu du sabot passe médialement par rapport à l'articulation du jarret. L'axe du membre est également dévié latéralement à hauteur du tarse. On appelle ce défaut également varus du tarse (jarret cambré, trop ouvert).

Fehlstellung der Schultergliedmasse von vorne betrachtet, wobei die Lotrechte vom Buggelenk zur Hufmitte medial der Karpalgelenke verläuft. Die Gliedmassenachse ist auf Höhe des Karpus nach lateral gebogen. Auch Varusstellung genannt.
Fehlstellung der Beckengliedmasse von hinten betrachtet, wobei die Lotrechte vom Sitzbeinhöcker medial der Sprunggelenke verläuft. Die Gliedmassenachse ist auf Höhe des Tarsus nach lateral gebogen. Auch fassbeinig oder Varusstellung genannt.

Barrel-limbed or tarsus varus
hock varus
A conformational fault seen from behind. The axis of the hindlimbs is not straight: the hocks deviate outwards (a line dropped from the point of the buttocks passes medial to the inside of the point of the hock) or, more commonly, the fetlocks deviate inwards (base narrow). Both result in a bowlegged appearance and lead to excessive strain on the lateral aspects of the limb.

Défaut d'aplomb du membre pelvien: vu de derrière, la verticale abaissée de la pointe de la fesse tombe du côté médial du jarret. Ce défaut d'aplomb conduit à un excès de pression sur les parties latérales des membres distaux, et de même un excès de pression est imposé aux parties médiales des jarrets.
