A stamped horseshoe with a unfullered flat ground surface. This type of shoe is used in western riding to enhance the slide of a reining horse. The branches are extended to protect the horse's heels and increase the length of the slide.

sidebone shoe
A corrective shoe where the web of the branches on the foot facing side are forged to slope from the inner edge to the outer edge of the shoe. This type of shoe is used to enhance heel expansion in contracted hooves.

A sebaceous secretion which accumulates in folds of skin together with cell debris and dirt. Large amounts of smegma can accumlulate in the prepuce (sheath) of stallions and geldings.

A synthetic rim pad which extends into a tube that lies along the inner edge of the shoe. The non adhesive nature of the material and the physical protection of the cavity between the shoe and the sole prevents snow from becoming trapped and balling-up in the sole.

Describes the phenomenon that a behaviour can be learned more quickly or performed more often if it is seen to be carried out by another horse. An example for social facilitation would be following: A horse, which sees another horse drinking from a new automatic drinker, will approach and use the drinker more quickly or often than a horse that is introduced to the automatic drinker on its own.

Ein Beispiel für Imitationslernen wäre folgendes: Ein Pferd, bei dem ein anderes Pferd von einem neuen automatischen Trinker trinkt, wird den Trinker schneller oder öfter ansprechen und benutzen als ein Pferd, das dem automatischen Trinker allein zugeführt wird.
Forms the back part of the roof of the mouth. In contrast to the hard palate, the soft palate does not consist of bone but of several muscles and connective tissue, covered in a mucus membrane. During swallowing, the soft palate closes off the nasal passages to prevent food or fluids entering the nasal cavity (similar to the function of the epiglottis).
