humeral articulation
The shoulderjoint is a multiaxial ball and socket joint (alowing movement in many planes) between the glenoidal cavity of the shoulder blade and the head of the humerus.

Conformational fault of the hind limbs, where the angle of the hocks is less than 145° and the cannon (metatarsal) bone slopes to the front. A line dropped from the point of the buttocks runs through the point of the hocks but meets the ground well behind the hoof.

ossification of hoof cartilage
The presence of bony tissue (visible on a radiograph) in the collateral cartilage of the hoof. In some horses, sidebone is a normal development with increasing age (most frequently observed in cobs and heavy horse breeds). If seen in younger horses, the causes (apart from genetic) include conformational problems of the limb or the hoof, repeated trauma or work on hard ground and inappropriate shoeing. Sidebones are usually painful whilst forming and may then settle to cause virtually no discomfort at all. However large sidebones may interfere with associated tissue and cause discomfort.

Hufknorpelverknöcherungen scheinen bei gewissen Pferden eine Alterserscheinung zu sein. Früher waren davon häufig Kutschpferde betroffen weshalb in diesem Zusammenhang der Ausdruck «Plasterlahmheit» gebraucht wurde. Faktoren, die bei der Entstehung beteiligt sind: hohes Körpergewicht, Arbeit auf harter Unterlage, wiederholtes Trauma, Fehlstellungen, von der Norm abweichende Hufform und Beschlagsfehler. Hufknorpelverknöcherungen führen nicht zwingend zu Lahmheiten.

Silicium or Silicon (not to be confused with the polymersilicone) is a chemical element classified as a metalloid. Pure silicon is a dark grey solid with a metalic shine. It is an important trace element, and in the form of silicates it is necessary for bone growth.

Grâce à ses propriétés de semi-conducteur, il est souvent utilisé dans la construction des transistors et des puces informatiques. Sous forme cristalline, il a une couleur gris-noir métallique. Le silicium n'est pas dangereux: avec ses composés, il est au contraire nécessaire à l'organisme (élasticité des parois artérielles ou fixation du calcium par exemple). Un manque de silicium peut avoir des effets néfastes sur la croissance du squelette.

Silicones are synthetic polymers that are made up of silicon, carbon, oxygen and hydrogen atoms combined in a chain or lattice form. They generally have a rubber like consistency and after addition of a hardner they will maintain a given form while retaining a certain degree of elasticity. Silicone rubber is frequently used as a packing material between the sole of the hoof and a full pad. (It is also known as dental impression material).

A winter sport with skandinavian origins where a person on skis is pulled by a horse or sled-dogs. Skijöring horseraces are a feature of the annual snow racing meets in St.Moritz, Switzerland (White Turf).
