Sesamoid bones are small bones embedded in or positioned underneath tendons where they pass over bony structures. Horses have several such bones including a pair of proximal sesamoids palmar/plantar to the fetlock joint underneath the digital flexor tendons and the distal sesamoid bone (also known as the navicular bone) positioned between the coffin joint and the deep digital flexor tendon. Other examples are the accessory carpal bone and the patella (knee cap).

Les os sésamoïdes sont ainsi appelés du fait de leur forme rappelant celle de la graine de sésame.
Leur rôle est d'éloigner le tendon de l'axe articulaire à fin de le rendre plus efficace.
Sur le boulet, ces os sésamoïdes s'appellent os grands sésamoïdes ou os sésamoïdes proximaux, formant la partie arrière de l'articulation. Du côté palmaire de la surface des os grands sésamoïdes passent les deux tendons fléchisseurs.
On trouve aussi sur l'articulation inter-phalangienne distale un os sésamoïde distal (l'os naviculaire), qui sert de poulie au tendon fléchisseur profond.
D'autres exemples d'os sésamoïdes sont l'os accessoire du carpe (ou os pisiforme) et la rotule (patella) des membres postérieurs.

Sesambeine sind Knochen, welche entweder in Sehnen eingelagert sind oder unter Sehnen liegen.
Beim Pferd gibt es Sesamknochen im Bereich der Zehenknochen: am Fesselgelenk heissen die beiden Sesambeine Gleichbeine; sie bilden die Rückwand des Gelenkes. Über die hintere Fläche der Gleichbeine ziehen beide Beugesehnen nach unten. Das Sesambein, welches palmar/plantar am Hufgelenk liegt, heisst Strahlbein; es dient als Gleitlager für die tiefe Beugesehne.
Auch das Erbsenbein am Karpalgelenk und die Kniescheibe an der Hintergliedmasse sind Sesambeine.

A forging technique in which a flat piece of metal is given a slope or a saucer-shape (concavity) as is done when applying seating to the inside edge of the foot surface of a shoe. If a shoe is set down across the whole width of the web (e.g. in a set-heeled shoe), then the web will broaden slightly.

Shock absorption is the process of dissipating kinetic energy into physical compression of the material or heat. In farriery this is especially relevant to the impact phase of a horse's hoof on a hard surface. There are many pads and some horseshoes that aim to aid in the dissipation of some of this impact energy.
