A field of biology or (veterinary) medicine which is concerned with the functions of and interactions between organs, tissues and cells. While anatomy focusses on how the body is structured, physiology focusses on how the body works. Physiology is the study of biochemical and biophysical processes in the body e.g. metabolism, cell growth and proliferation, reproduction.

A penetrating injury of the hoof through a foreign body such as a nail, a screw or a wire. The injury may be anywhere within the hoof capsule although the frog and the clefts of the frog are particularly at risk. The object may penetrate and cause injury to underlying structures such as the corium or even deeper structures such as the coffin bone, the deep digital flexor tendon or the navicular bursa.

A tumor of the pituitary gland of the brain. The pituitary gland is involved in the regulation of hormones, most significantly endogenous cortisone levels. Tumors of the gland may be hormonally active and lead to permanent hypersecretion of cortisone-like substances. This results in typical clinical signs known as Cushing syndrome, including the development of long hair (retained winter coat) and chroniclaminitis.
