hoof stand
A shoeing aid consisting of a tripod or weighted circular base attached to a hoof rest. The solar surface of the hoof is rested on the stand, enabling procedures such as dressing of the wall or clenching to be carried out without having to hold the hoof.

Footfall sequence, walk
Component of an animal's diet which refers to fibrous plant-based feeds. Examples are grass, hay, silage, haylage or even straw. The term is used interchangably with roughage. Forage should always make up the largest proportion of a horse's diet. When used as a verb, to forage means to move around looking for food.

In physics, a force is any influence that causes an object to undergo a change in speed, direction or shape. The unit of force is the Newton (N) but it is refered to as F in mathematical formulae. Force (F) = mass (m) x acceleration (a).

A technical term for a plate (usually of metal), underneath which force detectors are positioned. A force plate can be used for gait analysis, allowing the force of a limb positioned on the plate during the stance phase to be evaluated .

front hoof
The hoof of the forelimb. The hoof angle (angle of the dorsal hoof wall to the ground) is usually between 45° and 55°, depending on breed and individual conformation. Warmbloods generally have a slightly higher hoof angle in the fore feet than Thoroughbreds. The shape of the hoof when viewed from the sole is usually rounder than the hind foot, although it should not be wider then it is long.
