The new, well perfused fibrous connective tissue that develops in healing wounds. Ideally it forms in the depth of a wound and grows until it fills out the wound completely before turning into more solid scar tissue that is covered by skin. The limbs of horses are liable to develop an excessive growth of granulation tissue that vastly exceeds the dimensions of the original wound. This is known as proud flesh.

granulation tissue, exhuberant
Granulation tissue, which is the loose, well vascularised connective tissue that forms in a healing wound. Growth can be excessive, particularly on horse's distal limbs. When it projects above the surface of the skin it is known as proud flesh. It bleeds easily and has to be removed before skin (epidermis) will grow back over the wound.
