A set-back shoe is attached so that it lies behind (sole-wards) the bearing edge in the toe region of the hoof. The toe wall is rasped back. This is a frequently encountered measure to aid breakover in the hind hoof.

beating down
A forging technique in which a flat piece of metal is given a slope or a saucer-shape (concavity) as is done when applying seating to the inside edge of the foot surface of a shoe. If a shoe is set down across the whole width of the web (e.g. in a set-heeled shoe), then the web will broaden slightly.

A force or strain produced by pressure exerted on a structure which can lead to physical deformation. A shear force acts sideways on an object and leads to its layers being shifted laterally in relation to each other, or its structure being shifted sideways in relation to a fixed base.

Shock absorption is the process of dissipating kinetic energy into physical compression of the material or heat. In farriery this is especially relevant to the impact phase of a horse's hoof on a hard surface. There are many pads and some horseshoes that aim to aid in the dissipation of some of this impact energy.

The use of extracorporeal shock waves for medicinal purposes. High energy shock waves are used to treat kidney, gall and bladder stones by breaking up the stones within the body. Medium and low energy waves are used to treat areas of chronicinflammation and pain in soft tissue that is adjacent to bone (e.g. at the insertion or origin of tendons and muscles).

Outside the UK, this term is used to describe the style of farriery as carried out by the farrier working alone, to differentiate it from the style of farriery whereby a farrier works together with an assistant. The farrier simultaneously holds the limb and works on the hoof: the limb is held between the knees (forelimb) or across the thigh (hindlimb), the hoof is seen 'upside-down' with a view across the bearing edge and sole. This style of horseshoeing is practised throughout the UK and the US.
