A sensory organ, cell or group of cells, or sensory nerve ending that produces a sensory impulse when stimulated. Examples are chemoreceptors on our tongue, which detect the presence of chemicals; thermoreceptors in our skin, which react to changes in temperature; photoreceptors in our eyes, which react to light; mechanoreceptors in our skin, which react to mechanical forces.

Translations :

septicaemia

A dangerous condition where bacteria causing an infection in a part of the body (a wound, or an organ, e.g. pneumonia) enter the blood stream, along with the toxins they produce (a condition known as septicaemia). This can lead to a spread of the infection to other organs and tissues, potentially the whole body. Sepis (and septicaemia) can be fatal and requires immediate veterinary treatment. Affected horses are very poorly, common symptoms include fever, high heart and respiratory rate, brick-red mucous membranes,  an inability to stand, anorexia. It is more common in foals than in adult horses.

Translations :

Français
  • sepsie, f

Sesamoid bones are small bones embedded in or positioned underneath tendons where they pass over bony structures. Horses have several such bones including a pair of proximal sesamoids palmar/plantar to the fetlock joint underneath the digital flexor tendons and the distal sesamoid bone (also known as the navicular bone) positioned between the coffin joint and the deep digital flexor tendon. Other examples are the accessory carpal bone and the patella (knee cap).

Translations :
